Alyssa+Chase Hawaii Wedding

I’m usually a fairly introspective person; I spend a lot of time thinking about how any events in my life affect me, even small ones, and the effect that I cause as a person in space and time — a sort of cosmic footprint. Maybe this reflection is a way of validating my existence, or maybe it’s me being self-absorbed. I like to think that it’s just my mind making me feel okay for being infinitesimally small in the grand scheme of the cosmos. In my line of work, it’s easy to let people come and go. I can dip a big toe into people’s life pools for a second and retract it relatively dry. That happens sometimes, and honestly when it does I don’t give it much thought.

Alyssa and Chase are the kind of people who won’t let that happen; they are the kind of couple who sticks with you, as individuals and as a unit. The way they look at each other, and the way they instantly calm one another just by being present, it sticks with you. The first time I met Alyssa and Chase, I came to their home in Colorado to photograph their engagement session, which was going to be an epic trek through some of the most beautiful places the Western Hemisphere has to offer. I showed up at their house unbelievably jet-lagged, but they let me sleep, fed me, and took me in as family. We laughed over coffee as Chase showed me the places that their dogs had chewed on the walls of their home. Alyssa is an incredible photographer, so it was an honor to be asked to photograph her wedding. An oceanside ceremony, dancing under the stars, a cameo by Blue the raptor, and Dr. Ian Malcolm and his lovely wife were all the culmination for a perfect day.

These people, this place, even this particular time in my life and the personal things that I was going through — all of what was going on at the time made this event stand out tremendously in my life.

Alyssa, Chase, you two are beautiful. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your special day.
